Kelli Gillispie Is Lingerie Football League’s Hottest Politician!

 

We wish our civic officials ran around in lingerie… well, at least the good-looking women. Maybe they should use Kellie Gillispie as an example.
Gillispie is city councilwoman in Mound, Minnesota, just outside of Minneapolis, and she also plays center for the Minnesota Valkyrie, the local Lingerie Football League team.
Two things that obviously go together like peanut butter and jelly!
The Valkyrie has only played two games in their short existence, but they’re 1-1 and Gillispie somehow caught a touchdown pass in their season-opening win over the Green Bay Chill, despite being an offensive lineman… or… uh… linewoman.

Of course, she comes from the home of the Tonka Truck and Kevin Sorbo, so she’s obviously badass. Gillispie was elected to the Mound City Council in 2010, she was a gymnast, played soccer and participated in track in high school, and really doesn’t give a crap about what you think of he LFL gig.

“I’m never going to apologize for being an athlete because athletics is a main component of who I am today. Besides that, these are two parts of my life that I keep very separate,” Gillispie said. “With that being said, there was one gentleman that wasn’t too thrilled about it, but that’s probably because if I hadn’t run (for City Council) he would’ve been re-elected. Overall though, everyone has been really supportive, and I’ve received a tremendous amount of positive comments about the team, the hard work we put in and how much fun people have watching us play.”

Well, most people like T&A, especially in the freezing cold of Minnesota. Hell, we bet prancing around in lingerie even helps Gillispie get re-elected.

College Football 2011 Week 11 Preview: Cheerleader Edition

Last week, we went 6-4. Can’t really pinpoint where we went wrong. The LSU-Bama was a snooze-fest. I fell asleep. I’m not a defensive-minded guy. I was a QB and I long for the days of the Run ‘n’ Gun. Spread the formation, throw the ball. That’s why the Kansas State vs. Oklahoma State contest was a dream come true. We didn’t the Wildcats again in our Week 10 preview, but it’s only because they’re one of the few ranked teams that always seems to be the underdog by double digits. Fantasy Baseball Risers – Jamey Carroll

When the Twins signed Jamey Carroll a few days ago, they were routinely mocked by the critics. A 37 year old utility player finally landing his first everyday job, as a starting SS? In the words of the Messenger who challenged King Leonidis in 300, This is Madness! However, as a fantasy baseball player we’re not too concerned with the salaries players earn, or about the quality of their defence. We care about one thing, and that’s production.
Gone are the days of Jeter, A-Rod, Garciaparra and Miguel Tejada at shortstop. Now, the only real elite players left are Tulo, Reyes & Hanley. And Hanley looked absolutely lost last year. To give you an idea of how weak SS is, Carroll is considered an above average hitter at the position. Yes, Jamey Carroll, he of the 321 wOBA, ranked 13th of the qualifying SS’s by wOBA last year.
In standard 5X5 leagues, Carroll should be a big help in batting average. He’s hit 290 over the past two seasons in nearly 800 at bats. He’s an older player, so there comes the obvious risks of decline, but he should be able to hit around 280 or better. If Carroll leads off for the Twins, he could be looking at 75+ runs. Possibly higher, given that he’s shown good patience and should be a lock for a 360 OBP. Over the past two seasons he’s managed to steal 22 bases while being caught 4 times, so you can also expect him to swipe 10-12 bags. Don’t expect too many RBIs though, as Carroll is the definition of a slap hitting middle infielder. Carroll had a .058 ISO last year – which means the next time he hits a home run will be his first since 2009.
So what can you expect from Carroll? He’s a tough player to predict, given that he’s never played a full season. He’s had a significant number of at bats the past two seasons in LA, so if he stays healthy, he could post a 285 BA, 75+ runs, 40+ RBIs, 0 HR and 11 SB in the traditional 5X5 leagues. Shallow leagues can completely ignore Carroll, but a team in a deeper league could gamble on him and end up with a decent SS who contributes in 3 categories. And since he’s played a lot of time at both 2B and SS, he can fill in for either position. Carroll’s versatility is a small advantage that might make him more worthwhile on draft day.

9:42 a.m. – Woburn Street caller reports a pick up truck with a trailer and a Bobcat on it knocked down numerous street signs.
2:30 p.m. – Caller at Wilmington Shell on Main Street reports two younger males were possibly using some type of narcotic. Last seen taking a right out of the parking lot towards Michael’s Place.
8:36 p.m. – Carlmar Beauty Salon reports window broken tonight sometime between 6:30-7:15 p.m. Does not appear to be breaking and entering.
10:43 p.m. – Off to St. Dorothy’s Church where a vehicle is parked next to a clothing deposit bin. Two Brockton men arrested for receiving stolen property and breaking into a depository.

ABU DHABI: Newly-crowned double world champion Sebastian Vettel drew level with Nigel Mansell in the Formula One record books on Saturday when he delivered a stunning fastest lap to secure pole position for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
The 26-year-old German steered his Red Bull car round the Yas Marina circuit in dazzling fashion to create a dramatic finale and steal pole from Lewis Hamilton, who will start second on the grid alongside him for Sunday’s 55-laps day-night race.
It was Vettel’s 14th pole this year and the 29th of his career, in his 80th Grand Prix. Briton Mansell reeled off his record 14 poles in a single season with the Williams team in his drivers’ title winning year of 1992.
Hamilton was second quickest ahead of his English compatriot and McLaren team-mate Jenson Button with Australian Mark Webber fourth in the second Red Bull.
Two-time champion Spaniard Fernando Alonso qualified fifth ahead of his Ferrari team-mate Brazilian Felipe Massa.
The two Mercedes of Germans Nico Rosberg and seven-time champion Michael Schumacher were seventh and eighth ahead of the two Force Indias of German Adrian Sutil and British rookie Paul Di Resta.
A delighted Vettel screamed with joy as he took pole.
“Yes, that’s it, thank you boys,” he shouted while back in the paddock former Beatle Paul McCartney admitted he had become hooked by the thrill of the moment.
“Now I know why George (Harrison) loved it so much.”
The first part of qualifying began with track temperatures falling with the sun, from over 40 degrees Celsius to around 32 degrees, a change in conditions that improved tyre durability and performance.
As in the final free session, when he was fastest, Hamilton also continued cutting time as he topped the times ahead of Webber and Button, with Vettel fourth.
Unfortunately, it was not such a happy session for veteran Brazilian Rubens Barrichello who was unable to clock a lap in his Williams and will start from the back end of the grid.
Schumacher scraped through after struggling until he switched to soft tyres for his final faster laps when Massa also took a set of softer tyres to ensure he made progress.
The second mini-session Q2 saw Hamilton continuing his coruscating form, clocking a lap of 1:38.434 before a red flag curtailed the action when the base of a plastic bollard landed on the circuit.
This left him clear of Vettel in second place with Alonso third as dusk ushered in darkness and the dazzling glare of the track’s floodlighting system.
It also left several teams without a spare set of soft tyres for the remaining qualifying laps.
Schumacher, using soft tyres again, squeezed into the top ten shoot-out, behind the two Mercedes-powered Force India drivers, but it soon boiled down to a fight between McLaren and Red Bull at the front.
On their first hot laps, Hamilton was again fastest in 1:38.704, just four-hundredths of a second quicker than Vettel with Webber third ahead of Button and Alonso, but it was all so close that nobody could feel sure of a prime starting spot.
Another blur of activity in the pits preceded a flurry of final fastest laps in the battle for pole with McLaren taking charge, Button clocking a 1:38.631 before being outpaced by Hamilton and then, in the final seconds, by the astonishing Vettel.

Kamran Akmal want spot-fixing stigma to go away - ROUTERS

KARACHI: Wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal believes the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) should check the assets and bank accounts of all of its players every six months to ensure future generations do not fall prey to corruption scandals.
Three Pakistan players were jailed earlier this month, including former captain Salman Butt, after being found guilty of agreeing to bowl pre-determined no balls in a test against England last August.
“I would support any move by the PCB to regularly check player assets and accounts. I say it should be a six month exercise,” Akmal, who has recently fallen out of favour with Pakistan’s selectors, told Reuters.
“Only such an exercise can clean up our image and end these baseless allegations made against us all the time.”
Akmal said he was fed up with the constant allegations surrounding Pakistani players.
During the court case, Akmal’s name was mentioned a few times in connection with the spot-fixing allegations even though the wicket-keeper batsman was not on trial.
“I would welcome any move by the ICC to have a fresh inquiry based on evidence allegedly given in the spot-fixing trial in London,” said Akmal.
Players’ agent Mazhar Majeed, who was also jailed after pleading guilty to corruption charges before the start of the trial, said other Pakistani players were also involved in spot fixing.
“I am ready to make myself available to any investigation. Because I want this stigma to go away for ever,” Akmal added.
“The ICC and PCB cleared me to play for Pakistan but yet the media keeps on mentioning my name in relation to spot-fixing stories.”

Mohammad Amir can appeal spot-fixing jail term

LONDON: Mohammad Amir, one of the Pakistan cricketers jailed for fixing parts of a test match in England last year, was given permission on Friday to challenge his sentence.
The teenage fast bowler was sentenced earlier this month to six months in prison for bowling no-balls at prearranged times during a match at Lord’s in August 2010.
A judge at the Court of Appeal in London refused Amir, 19, bail but granted him permission to appeal against his sentence, the Press Association reported Justice Kathryn Thirlwall directed that the appeal should be heard before Nov. 29.
Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt, who was sentenced to 30 months at London’s Southwark Crown Court as part of the same plot which also included opening bowler Mohammad Asif, is also seeking to appeal.

It is expected that their cases will be heard together if Butt is also granted permission to appeal.

Gail Kim was able to pick up the win after hitting her finisher on Velvet.

Thoughts: Unfortunately for Knockouts Champion Velvet Sky, a few of her in-ring flaws were seen in the match… With the singles belt on her, expectations are naturally higher.
Mickie James really shined in the match, and a feud between her and Gail Kim is one that TNA should greenlight.
Gail Kim will challenge Velvet Sky this Sunday at Turning Point for the Knockouts Championship.

Lawsuit against swimming establishmentv - Fox Sports

Former swimming coach Christopher Wheat was sentenced a year ago after admitting to sexual activity with a 14-year-old member of his Lawrence youth swim team.

Now, the girl's lawyer has filed a lawsuit alleging the culture around youth swimming allows pedophile coaches to prey on the kids entrusted to their care.

Lawyer Jonathan Little filed the lawsuit on behalf of the girl against United States Swimming and Indiana Swimming, the national organization that governs competitive swimming and its affiliate. The lawsuit also names Lawrence Township Schools, Wheat, former Lawrence coach John Diercks and McCutcheon High School swim coach Amanda Juntenen Cox.

Generally, the lawsuit alleges that people in positions of authority were made aware of allegations against Wheat but never went to law enforcement as required by law.

USA Swimming spokesman Mike Whewell said the organization does not have a culture of protecting pedophiles and had not been warned of allegations of past sexual abuse by Wheat. Whewell said USA Swimming has a comprehensive athlete-protection policy and it banned Wheat as a member after his arrest.

Diercks told The Indianapolis Star by email Thursday that he did not know about the lawsuit and that he was in no way involved.

Other defendants either could not be reached by The Star or declined comment.

It's Little's sixth lawsuit against USA Swimming, an organization based in Colorado Springs, Colo., that faces an increasing number of lawsuits alleging a pattern of sexual misconduct among swimming coaches nationally.

The lawsuit comes at a time when the public could hardly be more aware of such allegations. No story has more dominated the national news this week than the shocking allegations of a sexual abuse cover-up at Penn State University.

In both the Lawrence and Penn State cases, a coach is accused of abusing a minor, and others in a position of authority are being accused of not doing enough to prevent it.

"We have a rotten, sick culture in USA Swimming," Little said at a news conference Thursday. "Just like in the Penn State case, those in authority ignored sexual abuse claims and failed to report sexual abuse complaints to law enforcement.

"USA Swimming and Indiana Swimming have failed to protect (my client) and possibly a number of other swimmers across the country by fostering a culture that places the protection of pedophile coaches ahead of protecting athletes."

The lawsuit asks for unspecified monetary damages and calls for the removal of USA Swimming and Indiana Swimming officials and coaches who, Little alleges, knew about the misconduct. Little also asked the Marion County prosecutor's office to charge officials and coaches who, he says, never reported allegations to authorities.

Brienne Delaney, spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office, said the office reviewed evidence before Wheat's trial and decided not to file charges against any other coaches or officials.

Wheat was sentenced in September 2010 to eight years in prison and two years in community corrections after he pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual misconduct with a minor and one count of child solicitation. The victim was an eighth-grade swimmer on the Lawrence Swim Team, where Wheat was head coach and executive director. He also was an assistant coach for Lawrence North.

On Nov. 4, a Marion County judge declined to shorten Wheat's prison sentence.

The victim asked the judge to keep Wheat behind bars, saying: "I rarely feel like a normal teenager."

She never would have been in harm's way, Little contends, if others had reported what they knew to law enforcement.

It started with John Diercks, Little said. Little contends in the lawsuit that swimmers told two assistant coaches about Wheat's "sexually inappropriate behavior" in the spring and summer of 2001.

The suit further contends that those coaches informed Diercks, the former head coach at Lawrence North.

But, Little said, Diercks never reported the allegations to law enforcement. Soon after, Wheat resigned his coaching position. But then in 2003, court documents say, Diercks hired him back.

"I am unaware of any lawsuit filed against me," Diercks said Thursday in his email response. "I was (and am not) in any way involved."

Little said officials from USA Swimming, the Lawrence school district and Indiana Swimming also allowed Wheat to be hired despite knowing of allegations made by parents.

Officials from Indiana Swimming did not return messages for comment on the lawsuit. Robin Phelps, the school district's spokeswoman, said district officials would have no comment until they had seen the lawsuit.

Little said at least one other swim coach also knew of Wheat's behavior. A series of text messages filed in the criminal case details a conversation on Oct. 4, 2009, between Wheat and Amanda Juntenen Cox, the McCutcheon High School swim coach and head of the youth team Maverick Aquatics.

Wheat, in the messages, admits to having a relationship with a young girl. He describes her as the "blonde one" and names her friends. Cox says "OK! That's was imy (sic) first thought."

Wheat describes being depressed and tells Cox the girl's mother had chaperoned a sleepover at the new pool the previous day -- and both Wheat and the girl were there.

"Her mom kept asking me what's wrong … I wanted to say well I have been making out and the like with ur daughter … and well she called it quits earlier today" and "now I have 4 years with her … ugh … who knows where this one goes … Cox replies "D`amn" and Wheat asks "what" and Cox texts "Age" and then "But good catch … now put her back in the lake and chalk it up as an experience, smile about it occationally (sic), and upgrade to college … Or a vacation w/ boys."

In the text messages, her "cavalier attitude is beyond belief," Little says. Cox could not be reached Thursday.

Little has five active lawsuits on behalf of swimmers against USA Swimming. Another case, he said, has been resolved — but he wouldn't disclose details, citing a confidentiality agreement.

In one of the five active cases, he represents one of the victims of Brian Hindson, former Kokomo and Westfield coach. Hindson pleaded guilty in 2008 to 16 counts of child pornography after secretly recording girls younger than 18 undressing.

Serbia’s Tennis Federation President Resigned

The long standing power battle in Serbian tennis between the existing hierarchy and the Djokovic family has taken another twist with the news Slobodan ‘Bobo’ Zivojinovic has resigned as the president of the Balkan nation’s tennis federation.
Pressure has been mounting on Zivojinovic for much of the last year and his decision will be announced formally at a Serbian Tennis Federation meeting scheduled for November 24. According to Serbian media reports Zivojinovic will be replaced by Serbia’s Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic.
Former top-ranked player Zivojinovic has been at odds with Djokovic’s father Srdjan after Serbia won the Davis Cup late last year. Djokovic Senior maintained Zivojinovic did little to help the careers of his son or other Serbian players.
Zivojinovic reportedly said he was resigning because of his obligations with the International Tennis Federation and its Davis Cup committee.

Baseball-Rangers' Hamilton has successful sports hernia surgery -ESPN KARACHI

Texas Rangers All-Star outfielder Josh Hamilton has undergone successful surgery for a sports hernia and is expected to be fully recovered in time for spring training in February, the team said on Friday.
Hamilton, the 2010 American League most valuable player, had the surgery in Philadelphia on Friday.
The four-time All-Star batted .298 with 25 homers and 94 runs batted in in 2011 despite missing part of the season with a broken bone in his right arm.
He has helped the Rangers make the World Series the past two seasons. They lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games this year.

No word on Nats' player Ramos abducted in Venezuela -Routers

(Routers) - Friends and family of kidnapped U.S. Major League Baseball player Wilson Ramos in Venezuela prayed for his safe return on Friday from gunmen who seized him during an off-season visit to the South American country.
The 24-year-old Washington Nationals catcher was at his mother's home in the city of Valencia on Wednesday when four men dragged him into a stolen car and sped away. He had been due to play for the local Aragua Tigers during the off-season.
"There is still no news. ... The kidnappers have not made contact. We just have to remain patient, pray and have faith," Tigers spokeswoman Kathe Vilera said.
"It is anguish, yes it is. But there is hope and we have to think positive. We continue to support his family," Vilera added.
Kidnappings, armed robberies and murders are common in Venezuela, where insecurity routinely tops surveys of voters' concerns ahead of a presidential election next October.
But Ramos's case has particularly shocked this baseball-mad nation, putting big pressure on the authorities to find him. He is one of the many players from Venezuela who have found stardom and wealth playing baseball in the United States.
Friends and neighbors flocked to the family's modest home, a minute's silence was held at each local league baseball game, and players wore green armbands in a show of solidarity.
Fans at the stadiums waved hand-made signs reading "Free Wilson Ramos" and "Wilson we are with you and your family."
Police found the vehicle the kidnappers used abandoned on Thursday, and detectives from the CICPC investigative division produced artists' impressions of two of the suspects.
"The Chavez government is working 24 hours a day to solve this case," said Deputy Interior Minister Edwin Rojas.
Abductions in Venezuela typically target wealthy local businessmen and landowners, although relatives of Major League Baseball players have been targeted here in the past.
In many cases, victims are taken to cash machines in so-called "express kidnappings" that last a few hours or less. In others, gangs demand big ransoms from relatives. Experts say the majority of cases are never reported to the police.
'OVERWHELMING INSECURITY'
The abduction of Ramos has been especially distressing for Venezuelan baseball fans, who are hugely proud of local players who make it into the U.S. big leagues.
Seizing on public outrage at the case, the opposition Democratic Unity coalition said it was more evidence of "the overwhelming insecurity that we Venezuelans are suffering due to the negligence of the government."
The Washington Nationals and Major League Baseball said on Thursday they had been instructed to make no further comment beyond a statement of concern for Ramos and his family. The league said its investigators were working with authorities.
On opening day last spring there were 62 players born in Venezuela on Major League Baseball club rosters.
Baseball was brought to the country by U.S. oil workers early last century. Local TV is packed with games broadcast from the United States, and Chavez himself is a player who once dreamed of pitching in the major leagues.
Ramos is considered one of the more highly regarded catching prospects in baseball. He had a .267 batting average with 15 home runs and 52 runs batted in for the Nationals during the 2011 season, his first in the major leagues.

As a lover of the game, it shook my soul to see this betrayal to the country and its honour, the national colours and the millions of fans around the world-and the fruit of the betrayal. Conviction of Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif by a British court is an immense disgrace in Pakistan’s crisis infested cricket history. I was perhaps one of the few persons in this country who, from day one of this fiasco had stated that captain Salman certainly had his hands red in this controversy. I had also suggested that the seriousness of this controversy could perhaps have been reduced with a more sensible Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman than Ijaz Butt.

The moment this news was broken by The News of the World, Pakistan should have immediately withdrawn Salman, Asif and Mohammad Aamir from the touring team. Instead the PCB chose a path of confrontation both with the International Cricket Council (ICC) as well as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). In an unparalleled stupid move, our honourable ambassador in UK called the players, held his own investigations and declared them ‘totally innocent.’

The latest court verdict which sentences Salman for two and a half years, Asif for 1 year and Aamir for six months has made everybody look like a fool simply because nobody realised the seriousness of what had happened. One would recall a photograph of former manager Yawar Saeed laughing his head off on the balcony of Lord’s ground (or was it The Oval?) with a copy of The News of the World in his hands. It is now time for the powers that be in Pakistan to hold an inquiry in some significant issues. Firstly and most importantly, what were the precise duties and mandate of manager of the team and was it not the part of his duty to ensure discipline amongst players so that they didn’t participate in any unhealthy activity. Secondly, what was the precise nature of duties of full time security officer who accompanied the Pakistan team during that tour because providing security to visiting teams is the responsibility of the hosts. In the light of findings into these sensitive areas, future course of action especially the roll of managers and other team officials needs to be redrafted.

Cricketers are the most well paid sportsmen in Pakistan with an average earning of Rs.10 million which is a lot more than what highly qualified people like financial accountants, auditors etc make and yet if despite this wealth, they get involved into filthy activities like spot-fixing and match-fixing and flush the country's integrity down the drain, it is utterly disgraceful and is indicative of mental level of this breed. The accusations and proof were all recorded, not hearsay or circumstantial. Their guilty verdicts were almost set in stone. They should have spared themselves and Pakistan, the humiliation, and avoided the trials altogether. Surprisingly, they continued to be projected as heroes even after the can of worms had been opened.

They spent the last year smiling and talking lies on talk shows and in the press every other day – arrogantly thinking it was some fools paradise and they would get away with it. Shahid Afridi was openly caught tempering the ball and penalized. We elevated him to Test captaincy and he is now being projected as a role model day in and day out in a TV commercial. Will we ever learn or do we wish to become outcasts in international sports? Pakistan’s honour is bigger and greater than the fame and name of all these so-called heroes.

The PCB now needs to evolve a fresh code of conduct for players, which must contain a clause of criminal proceedings against a player suspected of such activities. New PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf has started on the wrong foot. He is apparently more interested in publicity photo sessions and TV interviews without even having acquainted himself properly with the detailed working of the PCB. No sports administrator worth his salt would pay the glowing tributes that Ashraf paid to former chairman Ijaz whose era was undoubted the greatest disaster in Pakistan cricket.

He is now going to fly off to the United Arab Emirates to watch the Pakistan-Sri Lanka ODI series instead of staying put in Lahore to try and make an effort of damage control. Soon other fringe benefits will follow. After all the PCB is a gold mine for foreign trips, unlimited privileges and fringe benefits together with great publicity avenues. So all the best to Ashraf!

Tennis: Djokovic, Federer, Murray reach Paris quarters

 

Novak Djokovic rallied from a set down to beat fellow Serb Viktor Troicki 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 and reach the Paris Masters quarterfinals today.
Andy Murray, Roger Federer, Tomas Berdych, David Ferrer of Spain and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France also advanced.
The top-ranked Djokovic looked a pale shadow of the player who dominated the first half of the season, making 44 unforced errors compared to 28 winners.
"It's obvious that I'm still not playing in the form that I had in the last 10 months,'' said Djokovic, who returned to action last week in Basel after a six-week injury layoff. "It takes a little bit of time to get into the rhythm.''
Djokovic dropped serve twice to lose the first set to Troicki. But he broke for a 4-2 lead in the second, and leveled the match when Troicki sent a bakchand wide. The Wimbledon and U.S. Open champion then raced to a 4-0 lead in the final set.
Djokovic will next play Tsonga.

Murray routed Andy Roddick 6-2, 6-2 and will next face 2005 champion Berdych, who beat Janko Tipsarevic 7-5, 6-4.
The second-seeded Murray improved his record to 17-0 since the U.S. Open and has won 27 of his last 28 matches since mid-August.
Murray outclassed Roddick, hitting 27 winners compared to only four for the American. He broke Roddick twice in each set, taking the first with a crosscourt forehand winner before clinching victory with an ace.
"I started the match well, which against him is always important, because he plays his best when he's ahead,'' Murray said. "Because I broke him earlier, I was able to dictate a lot of what happened out there.''
Roddick received a warning from the chair umpire at 2-0 in the second set after smashing his racket out of frustration.
Roddick will finish the season outside the top 10 for the first time since 2001.
"I just need to get in better shape as far as movement, and kind of catch up a little bit,'' Roddick said.
The fifth-seeded Berdych trailed 5-1 in the first set and 4-1 in the second, but fought back both times to clinch his spot in the eight-man ATP World Tour Finals. His victory meant Tsonga and Mardy Fish also secured spots in the season-ending tournament in London, with Tipsarevic missing out.
Tipsarevic made two double-faults in a row to set up match point for Berdych.
Federer downed Richard Gasquet of France 6-2, 6-4 to next meet Juan Monaco of Argentina.
The third-seeded Swiss broke serve twice in the first set and took a 4-3 lead in the second on a double-fault from Gasquet before clinching victory with a forehand winner.
Meanwhile, fourth-seeded Ferrer ousted Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine 6-3, 6-2, and the sixth-seeded Tsonga defeated Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-3, 6-4.
Ferrer will take on American John Isner, who beat Feliciano Lopez of Spain 6-4, 6-2.
A double-fault from Seppi gave Tsonga a 2-0 lead and the Frenchman took the first set with a forehand winner. The 2008 champion then broke for a 4-3 lead in the second, winning the match when Seppi netted a forehand.
Fish was leading 6-1, 6-7 (6), 2-1 against Monaco when a left hamstring injury forced him to retire.
Fish received treatment in the final set but was forced to quit after playing one more point.
"I started feeling it probably late in the second set,'' Fish said. "It went from sort of tightness and an uncomfortable feeling to, in that last game that I served, a lot more pain, a lot sharper.''
The injury was a recurrence of his hamstring problem from the Swiss Indoors in Basel last week, but Fish still plans to play in the tour finals in London.

High Court quashes Minto's conviction over tennis heckling

Veteran protester John Minto has scored a High Court victory after a judged ruled that his megaphone protest against an Israeli tennis player was not disorderly behaviour.
Minto and seven others were convicted and discharged in the Auckland District Court for disorderly behaviour after they used loudspeakers to try and disrupt the ASB Classic tennis at Stanley Street in downtown Auckland last year. They targeted Israeli professional Shahar Pe'er.
They appealed and in a ruling out today, High Court Justice Heath said the issue he had to consider was one of degree.
"It goes without saying that a verbalised protest may offend or disturb a member of the public who either disagrees with what is said or takes umbrage at the disruption of his or her own legitimate activities," the judgment says.
"But disruption to an individual's enjoyment of a sporting event is not the same thing as disruption of public order.
Justice Heath set aside the conviction and said there was no need for the case to go back to the District Court.
The others who won the appeal were Janfrie Wakim, John Darroch, Ruth Amato, Rochelle Rees and Malcolm France.

Australia lose two early wickets against S.Africa - ESPN PAKISTAN

CAPE TOWN Nov 9 (Reuters) - Australia struggled to 39 for two at lunch after South Africa's Dale Steyn and debutant Vernon Philander took a wicket apiece on the first day of the first test at Newlands on Wednesday.
Shaun Marsh, on 17 not out, and Ricky Ponting, with eight, battled to keep the hosts at bay in difficult conditions.
South Africa elected to bowl first and, after rain delayed the start of play by one hour and 45 minutes, snared their first wicket in the fifth over when Shane Watson was caught at second slip by Jacques Kallis off Steyn.
Watson had only scored three when he was squared up by a wonderful delivery that landed in line with leg-stump, before moving away late to find the edge of the bat.
The 26-year-old Philander made an impressive start to his test career as he kept to a tight line and obtained swing and seam movement.
He roared with delight when, with his 18th ball, he found the edge of Phil Hughes's bat with a delivery that angled across the left-hander, having him caught behind by wicketkeeper Mark Boucher for nine.
It was Boucher's 500th test catch, the 34-year-old having taken 498 for South Africa and two for the Rest of the World against Australia in 2005/06.
Australia were 13 for two but Marsh and Ponting stuck to their task well to deny South Africa any further breakthroughs.Steyn had taken one for eight in five overs at the break and Philander had one for 16 in six overs.

Pakistan, Sri Lanka revive one-day rivalry - Times of India

KARACHI: Pakistan and Sri Lanka open their rivalrly in limited overs cricket as the five-match one-day series which begins from Friday promises fierce competition from two talented sides.

Pakistan won the preceding three-Test series 1-0, but their captain Misbah-ul Haq feared a strong comeback from the Sri Lankans, who are number two in the world to their opponent's sixth in ICC (International Cricket Council) rankings.

Sri Lanka also finished runners-up to India in this year's World Cup, where Pakistan were the losing semifinalists.

Pakistan beat Sri Lanka in the group stages of the 2011 World Cup and that's why Misbah feels both teams will start on an even keel.

"Sri Lanka are a very good one-day side, so we know we face good competition but we are focused and I believe it's a 50-50 game because if they reached the final of the World Cup, we were semifinalists," said Misbah.

The 37-year-old Misbah was appointed captain for all three formats of the game in June this year after Shahid Afridi retired in protest over being sacked as one-day captain.

Afridi, who with 21 dismissals was the joint-leading wicket taker in the World Cup with India's Zaheer Khan, returns to the squad after reversing his retirement decision earlier this month.

Misbah hoped Afridi's return will boost Pakistan.

"Afridi is a very good all-rounder and whenever he plays he is a threat for the opponents," said Misbah of Afridi who holds the record of the fastest one-day hundred, made off 37 balls against Sri Lanka in 1997.

But the 31-year all-rounder will be under pressure to perform in both batting and bowling after a poor one-day series against the West Indies in May, following which he fell out with then coach Waqar Younis.

Sri Lanka will also be boosted by the return of their sling-action paceman Lasith Malinga who earlier this year retired from Test cricket, but still poses big threats in limited over matches with his lethal yorkers.

"Lasith gives us good bowling support at the top and that is why we have a decent one-day team and had a good one-day series against Australia at home two months ago," said Sri Lankan captain Tillakaratne Dilshan.

But Dilshan has no series wins as captain, both in Tests and one-day, since taking over from Kumar Sangakkara in May this year.

The 35-year-old opener still believes his team carry some positives from the Test series.

"We can carry the positives from the Tests, our bowling is really experienced with Lasith and Dilhara (Fernando), both have played well and our batting is strong, so we have a good chance," said Dilshan.

The remaining matches will be played in Dubai (November 14 and 18), Sharjah (November 20) and Abu Dhabi (November 23). The sides will also play a Twenty20 in Abu Dhabi on November 25.

Junaid wants to fill Amir’s void in Pakistan attack

ABU DHABI: Rookie paceman Junaid Khan Tuesday said he wanted to fill the void left in Pakistan’s pace attack by the absence of his close friend and one-time bowling partner Mohammad Amir.
The 21-year-old took a maiden five-wicket haul to help Pakistan dismiss Sri Lanka for a low score of 197 on the opening day of the first Test at Abu Dhabi stadium.
“I will do my best to fill the void and do as well as my team needs,” said Khan, whose 5-38 rocked the formidable Sri Lankan batting. “I am delighted with my effort but all the bowlers did well as no one man can get a team out.” Khan hails from Abbottabad in North-Western Pakistan, a town where Osama Bin Laden was killed by American Special Forces in May this year, played most of his cricket with Amir.
The duo, both left-arm pacemen, toured various countries with Pakistan junior teams between 2005 and 2009 before the more talented Amir was picked for Pakistan’s seniors.
Khan said the pitch at Abu Dhabi stadium was responsive.
“There was a little bit of seam early but otherwise, I used the yorker and mixed the bowling up and it’s pleasing to get them out for a low score,” said Khan, who hoped Pakistan put up 300-350 for a winning lead.
Khan got just one wicket on his debut Test, against Zimbabwe last month.
Khan said legendary Pakistan pacemen Imran Khan and Wasim Akram were his idols but he developed into a good bowler only under Waqar Younis’s coaching.
“I am quite lucky that way. During the World Cup (2011), there was Aaqib Javed and Waqar and alongside them Wasim also gave tips when he came on how to bowl. I started playing cricket only after watching Imran.
“When I went to Lancashire, Wasim used to call me and tell me how to bowl, how to use the conditions,” said Khan. “That stint was very helpful. I learnt there how to seam, how to swing the ball, how to bowl a yorker.” Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews, who topscored with 52 not out, was disappointed with the overall batting performance.
“We lost our way in the second session and the batsmen did not bat well.
“The second session made a huge difference where we lost six wickets in four five overs and that was bad,” said Mathews, who added 54 for the eighth wicket with Suranga Lakmal (18).
Mathews denied the pitch was difficult for batting on.
“It was a pretty good batting wicket. Whoever hits the wicket hard had a bit off a nip off the wicket. All in all it was a very good wicket and Khan did hit the deck hard and got the reward,” said Mathews.

“Obviously it’s the first day of the Test match and we have got four days left. I strongly believe that our bowlers can still get us back into the game,”said Mathews, whose fifty was his fourth in the last five innings.
