BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's tennis got upset Thursday afternoon in its match versus Samford in the quarterfinal round of the Southern Conference Tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn.
The Apps defeated the Bulldogs (17-6) in a tight 4-3 decision on April 10, but Samford came out for revenge as it defeated ASU by a 4-2 decision.
The Mountaineers battled in doubles action with the SoCon foe, but the Bulldogs pulled out the doubles point by winning at the No. 2 and 3 spots.
Andrew McKinnon and Ezekiel Sansing ran into Fernando Costa and Carson Kadi at the number three pairing, and the Appalachian duo couldn't hang, falling 8-4. Philip Kloc and Alain Humblet made quick work at the No. 1 position by evening up in doubles play by winning 8-2 over Carl Abalos and Oliver Reynolds.
The doubles point then came down to the decision at the second twosome. Alex Markov and Sebastien King snagged an early 4-1 lead, but the Apps couldn't hold serve against Zac Dunkle and Alexander Sajonz, letting them back into the match. The match would end up getting tied at eight all going into a tiebreaker to decide the ever-important doubles point, but Markov and King were unable to close out the match and lost 9-8, giving Samford the doubles point.
In singles play, freshman Matt Saltsgaver played a veteran-like match at the number six slot, defeating Sajonz 6-4, 6-2 and knotting the score at 1-1. The fixed score didn't last long as Markov dropped 6-3, 6-2 to Kadi at the No. 1 spot.
Humblet came out firing at the third position against Abalos, winning in straight sets evening the score at two all.
After dropping a pair of tough first sets at the No. 4 and 5 slots, King and McKinnon looked to get back into the match by snagging the second set in their respective matches, but both couldn't muster up enough with each losing 6-0 in the second set. With both losing, the Bulldogs claimed the four points needed to win the match, upsetting the Black and Gold 4-2.
Kloc's match went unfinished, but the Australian was leading 5-2 in the third set before the match was called due to Samford clinching the victory.
ASU's loss to Samford ends the Mountaineers' season with the squad hoisting a record of 15-7. The disappointing conquer by the Bulldogs was the first-ever in Appalachian history.
Next season, the Black and Gold return all seven players that competed at the SoCon Championships. The Apps loses only one senior from this year's squad, Russ Ferrari.
