Girls tennis: League schedule has easy start

Except for its opening match of the season the Weston High girls tennis team has made short work of its opponents so far.
The Trojans, whose opening loss to Glastonbury was the first for the team since 2006, soon righted themselves against their South-West Conference competitors. For the most part they had little difficulty in a couple of matches last week.
Hosting Notre Dame of Fairfield on Monday, April 11, Weston faced little resistance from top to bottom in its lineup that afternoon. Five of the seven contests were 6-0, 6-0 shutouts as the Trojans swept the Lancers 7-0.
Two of the singles matches featured this result, including Zoe Valella’s win over Tracey Kalani at No. 1. Second singles player Morgan Murray did likewise to Margenta Varbiera.
Catherine Kravchenko had an easy first set against Jackie Rzasa at third singles, winning 6-0. Her opponent took two games in the next before it was in the books at 6-0, 6-2.
Making her varsity tennis debut, Jennie Bear defeated Cierra Eldridge 6-1, 6-2 at fourth singles.
Weston’s doubles teams also had an easy day, with three 6-0, 6-0 sweeps. Aly Ashmore and Caroline Toutoungi teamed up at No. 1 and defeated Jasmin Alicia and Evelyn Alverez, and Jessy Gersh and Dixie Glaser were at second doubles for a win over Came Lasterslager and Mana Delgado.
Also getting a sweep, Madison Groenings and McKenzie Murray defeated Gwyn Vital and Quance Williams.
At home against Bunnell three days later the Trojans had an easy time in a few matches. A couple were more challenging before they finished with a 6-1 win.
Valella gave up only two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jillian Broodbin. Murray had more competition in the first set against Lindsey Szuch but held her off and then took the match 6-4, 6-2.
The only singles sweep came at No. 3 when Kravchenko beat Michelle Karasik 6-0, 6-0.
Bunnell’s lone win was at fourth singles. Bear started well by shutting out Natalie Groves in the first set but the latter adjusted after that, taking the next and a third to win 0-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Weston adjusted first and doubles a bit. For the former, Ashmore teamed up with Emma Samson to beat Sara Liperz and Katarina Sokol 6-1, 6-2.
Toutoungi moved to second doubles and together with Gersh they swept Carly Kacsak and Jennifer Tatnall 6-0, 6-0. Groenings and Glaser also posted the same scores when they got the best of Lauren DeReinzi and Leanna Kuroghlian.
Weston, now 3-1, is at Bethel on Monday and hosts Brookfield on Wednesday. Both matches are at 4:15.
